Innovative Business, Family Style
Founded in 1994, Polyco entered the asphalt market as a small, family-owned business with big goals. Tom Nichols, our founder, recognized a need for better-engineered roofing and, eventually, paving solutions that embraced a green model of stability. Starting with nothing more than an idea on a napkin, $400, and a company of one, he realized …
What does a typical day look like for you at Polyco?
My main priorities are cash flow and forecasting. Polyco invests heavily in people and equipment each year so it’s important those models are accurate. I also spend a good deal of time reviewing Polyco’s operational and performance metrics and providing feedback to our sales and operations teams.
What did you do before joining Polyco?
After graduating from George Fox University in Oregon, I went to work for Grant Thornton, a firm I still love and miss. After 5 years with Grant Thornton, I worked at different companies in a variety of capacities. I was commuting to and from Sacramento for two years when the Polyco opportunity presented itself. I just love coming into this office every day.
What are you most excited about at Polyco?
Our growth potential and our products. We’re looking into expanding overseas and we are making investments domestically to further that growth. It’s unbelievably exciting.
Why is sustainability at Polyco important?
We’ve spent a lot of time and energy developing Sigmabond, and we know that’s where the world is going. We know that, especially in Europe, green technology and upcycling has been embraced. We have an opportunity to grow with this technology and we just need to unleash that power.
What does the future look like for Polyco?
Expanding our current lines of business — domestic roofing as well as paving. Globally, it’s entering the European market with Sigmabond. I also see us expanding our R&D center by making significant investments in people and equipment. Additionally, our R&D team will come up with new and exciting technology that will continue to further our sustainable philosophy in the paving and roofing industries. We know these industries will continue to shift in this direction and it’s important to position Polyco as a leader in sustainable roofing and paving products.
What do you love to do outside of work?
I love to travel and watch sports. My big passions are Formula 1 and European soccer. Now that my kids are older, I’ve had the opportunity to visit Dubai, Romania, Portugal, Netherlands, Argentina, Croatia and all over the U.S., so the last few years have just been unbelievable.
